Ahem.

As a close friend of Willy Nilly and Lonesome Hank, the reluctant time traveling dinosaur and tyrannical cowboy behind this Soil Saloon tomfoolery, my head has been swimming in all the controversy that has surrounded this latest event.

It’s a shame some people in this city don’t like to share with knobby tired folk.  The dinosaur and cowboy assure you that they meant (and caused) no harm.  But, Hank has been itchin to throw his spurs over a steel stallion now and again, and go ride some trails with his friends. And truth be told, y’all know we will again.  And truth be told, y’all know that mountain bikes ain’t going to turn our beautiful natural parks into ripped-up wasteland.  And truth be told, y’all know mountain bikes are the future, so rejoice!

Thanks to everyone who wrote letters, and if you haven’t written any yet, read the frantic post below.  Thanks to everyone who commented.  Many good thoughts there.

Soil Saloon may have to disseminate riding adventure information through slightly different methods in the future, as some of the preachers from the “mountain bikes will leave our green spaces barren and charred” church likely read these words now, but hey, we’ve got some attention.  Lets see if we can share the trails, share the parks, and keep on ridin’ and smilin’ in the meantime.

Much love to all, and if anyone wants to get to know the trails a bit more intimately, you may find yours truly out at a few of these here trail work days.

  1. Im sure I’ll bump into you out there. Hope to have as big of a turnout to work as we do to play.

  2. Not to shoot the messenger, but let’s do it again w/o the video.

  3. Maybe better than writing a letter to Jared – join him on a ride as he is himself an avid cyclist who happens to be in the middle of a 58 day tour of SF city parks. Check out the info here – http://www.sfgov.org/site/recpark_index.asp?id=92180

  4. I think if you’re interested in getting out there (as I am) you should check out http://www.parks.sfgov.org/wcm_recpark/Volunteer/WPSched_9_08.pdf for the correct volunteer info.

  5. Jared rockin the niner! lookin @ the sched it looks more like a monkeybar odyssey, But then again thanks for not driving.

Ps- sorry for liberally posting this about – but we need to generate some action

  7. Natural Areas cut down trees in Mclaren Park to keep people from riding in the quarry. Is that a “natural area”? See

  8. hey, Jared Blumenfeld is doing a ride to a park each day for next few months. It is a great chance to get some real time with him, get a feel for his position, and a chance to champion ours. He leaves McLaren at 8:30. link is to his schedule.

(I haven’t been yet due to finals, but will try for end of next week and report back

  9. Jared is scheduled for Mclaren park on Jan. 27 and Crocker Amazon on Jan. 29. I worked on the Mt. Sutro trail crew last weekend. I felt like I was on a chain gang. The Natural Areas type people watched us like hawks to be sure we didn’t add anything fun to the trails. Craig and Dan are doing their best to steer a moderate course, but bikers are getting the short end of the stick for sure.

  10. It is nice to see that cyclists are staying tuned to these land use issues and getting involved!

Joining Jared on a SFRPD bike tour is a great idea – but remember you are representing all of us so be respectful of his time and courteous with your comments.

SF Urban Riders thanks everyone who contributed to the trail work on Mount Sutro on 12/6. We hope it was a little more enjoyable than a chain gang?

Unfortunately Mount Sutro is not a location for anything more than Multi Use trails – and a model of inclusive community spirit. Sorry to disappoint on that level, but i think we would all agree it is a great place to visit and use.

SFUR is in talks with several other land managers ( besides NAP) and hope to have some exciting news on more BIKE SPECIFIC areas soon.

Bicyclists do deserve more and we will get it with your patience and commitment.

Please reach out to me personally if you need any info or have a suggestion or comment.
